Examples of How to Read the Position Rankings Table:
About The 2005 Fantasy and 2005 Rotisserie Baseball Scouting ReportsAfter writing my first book, Fantasy Baseball Strategy: Advanced Methods for Winning Your League, I heard from hundreds of people wanting my advice about specific players. Many of these people purchased a spreadsheet I designed to evaluate players based on specific league parameters and scoring. The demand was greater than I could handle, so I decided I would do my best to answer the questions fantasy baseball team owners ask the most, “Which players should I draft, and for how much?” and “How should I prepare for the draft?” The most critical mistake fantasy baseball owners make when considering players for their draft is looking at valuations that were not calculated for their league. The typical player guides and fantasy baseball magazines need to be generic in their valuation approach. The reason for this is simple; It is much more profitable to print a one size fits all player manual and concentrate their marketing dollars in one place. The problem is, one size does not fit all leagues. There are many variations of fantasy baseball leagues. The 2005 Fantasy Baseball Scouting Reports give you specific player valuations for the league you are in, not just the one most people are in. You will find six different 2005 Fantasy Baseball Scouting Report books at your bookstore:
If you get a chance, flip through the different books and compare the valuations of a few players. You will see that there is quite a difference. Do the magazines you normally buy account for all these kinds of leagues? If they do at all, they will usually devote two pages in a “cheat sheet” list of NL players and AL players while spending most of their print on combined AL & NL leagues. Trying to find out whether a guide is basing its dollar values on 5x5 Fantasy or 4x4 Rotisserie is nearly impossible, yet it should be the first thing fantasy owners look for when deciding to buy a guide that is right for their league. Context and VisibilityIn recent years, businesses needed to make their financial reports more transparent to investors (The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002) so individuals could get a better picture of what they are actually buying. Without a clear understanding of how the numbers are created, it is difficult to fully understand the true value of your investment. The same is true when you evaluate players in fantasy baseball. You do not need to know the exact calculations, but it would be nice to know the methodology and context for how a valuation was made. Then you can make an informed judgment of your own as to whether you agree or disagree. In this book, you will understand how the 2005 Fantasy Baseball Scouting Reports use category points to establish a player’s fantasy value. You will see how each individual player ranks in relation to his peers, how much his performance is expected to change, and why. Have you ever picked up a magazine, read a player description and said to yourself that it was obviously written by a different person than the one who did the projections? I think that every year. That will not happen in this book. I did the category points, projections, dollar values, and player descriptions myself. I wrote the descriptions as an explanation for why the projections are what they are. If you disagree with my qualitative analysis, feel free to adjust the dollar values accordingly for your draft. We will not always agree, but at least you will know what I was thinking when I made the projections. Practical GuidesIf you have participated in a few fantasy baseball auctions, you are familiar with the frustration that often occurs. It gets near the end of the draft and people are scrambling to find another player to throw out for bid. They are frantically thumbing through their magazines or lists they downloaded off the Internet. It is an extremely inefficient process because their player guides were not designed for the war room. Having participated in many auctions myself, I am constantly trying to improve my efficiency at the draft. One of my greatest advantages is at the end of the draft when I am able to identify the best available players for my team, while others are fumbling through their reams of paper. I know what goes through your mind when you are trying to fill out your team and everyone is yelling at each other to hurry up. That is why I created the Quick Lists. These are lists of the top players in each category. They are not just a bunch of names. You can see other relevant statistics and rankings; they are simply organized in a way that is most pertinent to your immediate needs. For example, you realize your team is full of home run hitting, low batting average (BA) players. You need a boost in BA with your next pick. A list of BA leaders is not enough. You know a player with more ABs is worth more than one with fewer ABs but the same BA. A ranking of players sorted by AB-adjusted BA category points is what you need to compare players effectively. Sure, you are looking for someone who can help you in one category, but the other categories still matter. You want to see how a player ranks against his peers so you can gauge how fiercely your competition will bid on him. Magazines invariably organize player descriptions by position. This book has lists and projections of players by position as well, but goes a step further by putting the descriptions in the context of overall value. This is a similar format to a mock draft. Studying mock drafts can help you understand and visualize the overall ranking of players in the context of a draft. In most cases though, the only information available to the reader in that context is the name of the player selected. There are no statistics and certainly no detailed descriptions of why a player should be ranked where he is in these mock drafts. It may be interesting to see how 12 different experts pick, but the reality is that they all value players differently and have different strategies. It is actually more helpful to you if the players ranked with an open quantitative and qualitative rationale are determined by one source, free of strategic bias. How Does Strategy Fit In?You did not think the author of Fantasy Baseball Strategy would go without some mention of strategy, did you? To be successful, you need a strategy for the draft and for the season. I did a survey of readers who bought the Strategy book directly from my website, www.fantasybaseballstrategy.com, and over one-third of them won their league. That by any measure is outstanding. One reader even sent me a screen shot of his first place finishes in all three of his fantasy baseball leagues. On average, the readers of Fantasy Baseball Strategy improved over three places in the overall standings from the season before. It would be nice to think that my book is the only reason for the success of my readers, but I believe anyone with a cohesive strategy will have an advantage over the typical fantasy baseball owner without one. That book simply shows you how to create a solid strategy. It is only part of the equation. The 2005 Fantasy and 2005 Rotisserie Baseball Scouting Reports fit in perfectly with any strategy. First, they are relevant to your league. Second, they give you context that is important for formulating your own opinions about players and how they fit into your strategy. Third, they give you insight into particular player strengths, which are the building blocks of just about any strategy. This information will give you a competitive advantage and you will not find it anywhere else. Finally, they are arranged with your needs in mind allowing you to execute your strategy on draft day efficiently and with clarity. If you are unable to execute your plan as devised, the greatest strategy in the world will not help your team. This book will help you draft the best players for you to execute your strategy.
What Happened to the Spreadsheet? While the spreadsheet had its value and many people have asked about it, I simply cannot support the product. Configuring it properly and accounting for all the differences in user ability, computer hardware, and software, was just too much for me to handle. This series of books was created to REPLACE the spreadsheet. While they may not be tailored your league's exact specifications, they should cover the six main types of leagues. This targeted approach will meet your needs better than the typical generic publications you are used to seeing. If you purchased the spreadsheet last year, please give these new books a try. I am certain they will fit your needs better and be much more practical than the spreadsheet at your draft or auction. The books are also much more affordable at only $9.95 each.
